Every year upon the arrival of All Saints Day, the parish of All Saints Church in Mills River looks forward to celebrating its patronal festival in grand fashion. This year, during the Octave of that great feast day, the parish hosted several joyous events to celebrate the festival.
On Friday, November 5, the children of the parish gathered in the parish hall for their Fall Festival of All Saints. The children wore their favorite costumes and were treated to a wide array of carnival games. Each child was given a score card to carry around to record the number of points they accumulated at each of the games. Once they completed the entire round of 15 games, they then were able to “cash in” their points for a variety of prizes in the prize store. A hot dog supper was served for everyone in attendance and then the night was capped off with a costume parade and judging contest where prizes were handed out in many age groups and categories. It was not just the children who had a fabulous time. The Festival was blessed to have 25 adult volunteers who proved they were certainly “young at heart.” A picture gallery of the night is down below.
The next day, the vestry gathered at the rectory to welcome the new Diocesan Bishop, the Most Rev’d Chandler H. Jones, for his first episcopal visit as the Ordinary of the Diocese. An old-fashioned North Carolina BBQ meal was served up In Bp. Jones’ honor. This evening event was an informal gathering to allow the vestry and the Bishop to come to know one another in a relaxed atmosphere.
The following day, Sunday, November 7, Bp. Jones visited with the congregation at All Saints Church. He preached at the 8:30 a.m. celebration of the Holy Communion and also received three new members, Leila Delger, Tom Morgan, and Nic Rutherford, into the fellowship of the Diocese. After coffee hour fellowship, Bp. Jones hosted a question and answer session during the Adult Sunday School time about his vision for the Diocese and the entire Anglican Province of America. At the principal celebration of the Holy Communion at 11:00 a.m., Bp. Jones presided and preached. He confirmed five members: Isaiah Byrd, Karen and Brent O’Conner, and Kathleen and Dave Lambert. He also received seven people: John Almert, Patricia Attaway, Anne Jurek, Richard Rineheart, Same and Laura Nagus, as well as their daughter Joy. The rector of All Saints, Fr. Erich Zwingert remarked that the fifteen people confirmed and received were the largest “incoming class” of “Saints” in his tenure. A parish-wide reception ended the day, honoring those confirmed and received and also welcoming Bp. Jones to the parish. Pictures of the day can be seen below.
