Report on the DOW 2016 Synod
Laity and clergy of the Anglican Province of America's Diocese of the West (DOW) gathered on October 13-15, 2016 at the Inn on the Commons in Medford, Oregon for its 2016 Synod, hosted by St. Andrew's Anglican Church, Jacksonville, Oregon.
In attendance were the Most Reverend Walter Grundorf, Presiding Bishop, his wife, Mary, and the Rt. Reverend Robert Giffin, Ordinary of the Diocese of Mid-America.
Also present as guests were Deaconess Myrna Parker, and her husband, Blaine, from St. Augustine's Anglican Church in Deming, NM; Bishop Craig Luesing, Rector of St. Alban's in Tacoma, WA; The Venerable Canon Fred Rivers, Church of the Epiphany, Phoenix, AZ; and Fr. Michael Bowhay, St. Anselm's, Pacific Grove, CA. Every constituent parish and mission of the DOW was represented, and there were many parishioners from St. Andrew's and St. Michael's Anglican Church, Wilsonville, Oregon present for Friday's Holy Communion and Confirmation.
The outgoing Standing Committee (SC) met Thursday afternoon and approved the DOW 2017 Budget for presentation at the Synod business meeting. The SC also proposed a slate of candidates for the new Standing Committee (whom had indicated their willingness to serve) that included a lay member from each church.
Following Morning Prayer on Friday, ably officiated by Dcn. Chris Smith and Dcn. Bill Baker of St. Andrew's Church, the Synod convened with introductions and an Address by Presiding Bishop Grundorf. The minutes of the previous Synod were approved, the budget was adopted, parish reports were given, and the new Treasurer and Standing Committee members were elected.
Bishop Giffin graciously consented to be considered as our new Episcopal Visitor, and was unanimously elected as same by the Synod.
Following lunch, Holy Communion was celebrated, during which Bishop Grundorf confirmed Hannah Staley and Brad Rothacher, St. Andrew's Church, and Aislinn Kencke, St. Michael's Church.
The newly-elected Standing Committee briefly met after Synod adjourned to elect and appoint officers. The members are: John Watson, St. Andrew's; Judy Collins, St. Dunstan's; Ben Lizak, Treasurer, All Saints; Fr. John Longcamp, St. Dunstan's; Canon Robert Hawkins, President, St. Michael's; Dave Mahar, Chancellor, St. Michael's; Bea Crites, non-voting Secretary, All Saints.
The Standing Committee also appointed Fr. Daniel Squires and Fr. Vincent Varnas as our the Board of Examining Chaplains. Fr. Squires will act as President.
That evening, attendees enjoyed a delightful Synod Banquet, at which time Bishop Grundorf appointed retiring Vicar General, the Rev. Canon Walt Crites, as Vicar General Emeritus in recognition of his many years of service leading the DOW...a standing ovation ensued. A very informative presentation concerning the economy and investing environment was given by Andrew Staley, Sr. Warden, St. Andrew's. Canon Robert Hawkins, Rector, St. Michael's, was appointed the new Vicar General of the DOW, and the successful Synod was closed with a final prayer by Bishop Grundorf.
The DOW would like to express its appreciation to the Synod Planning Committee of St. Andrew's for the execution of a most enjoyable and productive event. The business of the Diocese was smoothly conducted, and much fellowship was evident throughout the three days.
The 2017 DOW Synod will be hosted by St. Michael's, Wilsonville, Oregon.
